Subset of lupus erythematosus intermediate between discoid lupus erythematosus and systemic lupus erythematosus. It is characterized by papulosquamous discoid plaques or annular polycyclic lesions occurring mainly around the neck, on the back and front of the trunk and on the outer aspects of the arms. They usually heal without scarring. Photosensitivity, diffuse non-scarring alopecia and mouth ulceration may also be present, but do not occur in all patients with SCLE. Fever and malaise are usually present. Visceral disease is less frequent than in systemic lupus erythematosus, arthritis being the most frequent feature. Renal involvement is rare and mild.
