definitionContagious disorder caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which attacks infants and children as well as adults. Scabies is transmitted in the course of close physical contact, e.g. during sexual intercourse, as well as in camps and between children under unsanitary living conditions. Transmission by means of underwear or linen is rare. Severe pruritus is a typical symptom in affected individuals, and it is generally worst at night and when the patient is warm. Inflamed papules appear, and a pruriginous papulovesicular eczematous rash may develop. Sites of predilection include the interdigital folds on the hands and feet, the anterior axillary folds, the areolae of the breasts and the peri-umbilical region. The pathognomonic lesions of scabies are comma-shaped or irregularly convoluted burrows. At the end of each burrow, the mite is just discernible with the naked eye as a dark point. |
