definition'Herpes zoster is caused by the reactivation of varicella-zoster-virus which has remained latent in the sensory ganglia after a previous primary infection with chickenpox. This acute infectious, usually self-limited disorder involves the sensory ganglia and their areas of innervation and is characterized in children by mild pain along the distribution of the affected nerve(s) and crops of clustered vesicles over the area. The lesions persist for 10-14 days and heal without scarring in the majority of cases. | synonymsHerpes Zoster, Shingles |
