definitionA group of inherited disorders of connective tissue that vary in severity and are transmitted as autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant, or X-linked recessive traits. The primary characteristics are hyperextensible skin and joints, easy bruising, reduced wound healing, pseudotumours, and ocular defects. Distinct abnormalities in collagen synthesis have been identified in some subtypes of the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (type IV, VI and VII). The prognosis of the various EDS subtypes is based upon the specific associated features and their complications. |
