definitionPainful circumscribed perifollicular abscess that is produced by the infection of one or several hair follicles by staphylococci. It first presents as a small, inflammatory nodule, soon becoming pustular and then necrotic and healing after discharge of a necrotic core. The sites commonly involved are the face and neck, the arms, axillae, breasts, thighs, and buttocks. |
