Cushing's Syndrome

definition

A condition due to hyperadrenocorticism resulting from neoplasms of the adrenal cortex or the anterior lobe of the pituitary, or to prolonged excessive intake of glucocorticoids for therapeutic purposes. Cushing’s syndrome can occur at any age with no predilection for either sex. The symptoms may include weight gain, growth retardation in children, delayed sexual maturation, fatigue, weakness and skin changes. The characteristic skin findings are a plethoric facies, broad purple coloured striae at the site of skin tension, skin fragility, development of purpura after minimal skin trauma, hyperpigmentation and hypertrichosis. Osteoporosis of the spine, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and amenorrhoea may be associated. When secondary to excessive pituitary secretion of adrenocorticotropin, it is known as Cushing's disease.
