Excessive connective tissue response to skin injury characterized by firm red or pink plaques extending beyond the area of the original wound. They are most frequently found over the upper trunk and upper arms. Keloids are more common in darkly pigmented individuals, and most cases have been reported in patients between the ages of 10 and 30. There is a familial tendency to keloid formation.
