Universal erythema and loosening of the epidermis with scale and crust formation associated with severe diarrhoea, marked wasting and recurrent gram-negative infections. It is considered a severe variant of seborrheic dermatitis. In familial cases of infants with severe forms of Leiner's disease, dysfunction of the fifth component of complement has been reported. On the other hand some cases might be cases of Netherton's syndrome.
