definitionNon-thrombocytic purpura characterized by an acute, severe, often rapidly fatal haemorrhagic infarction and necrosis of the skin. The disease is triggered by bacterial, viral or protozoal infections. The primary pathology is a disseminated intravascular coagulation characterized by intravascular consumption of plasma coagulation factors, with depletion of platelets, associated with microthrombosis and a haemorrhagic diathesis. The occurring symmetrically distributed tender cutaneous ecchymoses enlarge rapidly, coalesce, and develop central necrosis. Haemorrhagic bullae may appear. | synonymsPurpura Fulminans |
