definitionInfection of the mucous membranes of the mouth by a fungus of the genus CANDIDA. It is characterized by sharply defined patches of creamy, crumbly, whitish pseudomembranes which, when removed, leave an underlying erythematous base. The condition is common in the first weeks of life and there is significant association with vaginal Candida carriage in the mother. In old age oral candidiasis increases when there are no teeth or ill-fitting dentures. Chronic erosive conditions of the mucous membrane of the mouth, e.g. pemphigus vulgaris, predispose to oral candidiasis, as well as disturbances of the normal flora of the mucous membranes by antibiotics. Oral candidiasis is a common secondary infection in immunodeficient patients. | synonymsCandidosis of Mouth, Oral Trush, Stomatitis Candidomycetica, Candidiasis, Oral |
