Rhinosporidiosis

definition

Chronic granulomatous mycosis caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi inducing polyps of the mucous membranes. It is found most commonly in India and South America. Fragile, pink to purple, verrucous nodules, polyps, or subcutaneous tumours develop in response to infection, mainly involving the nasal mucosa, nasopharynx, soft palate, and the conjunctivae. Rarely, the skin, rectum, or the genitalia may also be involved. Symptoms are associated with obstruction of the respiratory passages.
