Lupus Erythematosus Mucosae Oris

definition

Between 25 and 40 per cent of patients with lupus erythematosus suffer from oral lesions which particularly affect the palate and the buccal mucosa. The lesions begin as red patches and break down to irregular erosions and ulcers which often heal with scarring. They occur in both systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus and may develop as the initial manifestation or may accompany the onset of the cutaneous lesions.
