Xanthomas commonly associated with hypercholesterinaemia and increased levels of LDL (low density lipoprotein) in type II and type III hyperlipoproteinaemia and in secondary hyperlipidaemia. The lesions vary in size and shape from small papules to firm lobulated tumours which are yellow or orange in colour, often with an erythematous halo. Larger lesions may be tender on pressure. Pressure areas such as the knees or elbows are particularly affected.
