Neuroblastoma

definition

Neuroblastoma is a tumour that arises from the primitive neural crest cells and is the most common extracranial solid malignant tumour in infancy. The most common presentation is an abdominal mass most often palpable in the flank Skin lesions consist of highly characteristic firm, non-tender, slightly blue or bluish-grey metastatic nodules that, due to the release of cathecholamines, tend to blanch and develop a surrounding halo of erythema within 2 minutes after being palpated. Other manifestations include "racoon eyes" which are periorbital ecchymoses resulting from orbital metastases.
