Vitiligo

definition

A common, acquired, sometimes familial melanocytopenic disorder with focal depigmentation of the skin, occurring as a consequence of destruction of melanocytes. It is estimated that about 1% of the world population is affected by the disease. Vitiligo can begin at any age, but in 50% of cases it develops before the age of 20. It is characterized by sharply demarcated depigmented lesions with variable size and shape that are usually first noticed on sun-exposed areas of skin and have the tendency to expand over time. A number of disorders occur in association with vitiligo including thyroid disease, pernicious anaemia, hypoparathyroidism, Addison’s disease, Halo nevi and diabetes mellitus.
