Mucous Granuloma

definition

Traumatic rupture of mucous ducts leads to cystic spaces filled with mucinous material. Rupturing permits mucus to flow into the surrounding tissues, causing proliferation of connective tissue and granulation tissue. Mucous cysts appear as dome-shaped, translucent whitish-blue papules or nodules, usually on the inner surface of the lower lip. Rarely the upper lip, tongue, and buccal mucosa may be involved.
