Rubella

definition

Common viral disease caused by the RUBELLA VIRUS and most often affecting children and nonimmune young adults. The virus enters the respiratory tract via droplet nuclei and spreads to the lymphatic system. Rubella is characterized by a generalized maculopapular rash and enlargement of the posterior occipitocervical lymph nodes, which precedes the appearance of the rash. The small, discrete, reddish-pink maculopapules begin on the face, progress rapidly downward to the trunk and extremities, and subside, generally within a few days. Except for possible infection of the fetus during pregnancy, rubella is one of the most benign of all infectious diseases of childhood.
