Herpes Neonatorum

definition

Neonatal disease mainly due to type 2 herpes virus infection acquired by ascending infection from the maternal vaginal or cervical area, or during the passage of the foetus through the birth canal. Skin lesions characterized by vesicles on erythematous base occur in 72 per cent of neonates. Also, conjunctivitis, fever, icterus, hepatosplenomegaly and disease of the central nervous system may occur.
