Zinc Deficiency

definition

Zinc deficiency may be caused by a specific absorptive defect present in acrodermatitis enteropathica, by diarrhoea and malabsorption due to disease of the gastrointestinal tract, and by insufficient nutrition. Skin lesions due to zinc deficiency present as erythematous, scaly, and sometimes vesiculopustular eruptions located around the mouth, eyes, and genital area. The extensor surfaces of the major joints, the extremities, and the trunk may also be involved. Hair growth ceases and diffuse thinning of the hair may lead to total alopecia. Deep transverse depressions (Beau's lines) on the finger nails may occur due to temporary arrest of nail growth.
